BUSY

The first semester of my second year was... busy. I was quickly asked to work with computer programs, of which I had no previous encounter, and forced out of my comfort zone ( not complaining just a fact). What all of this means is that I kind of had the rug pulled from under my feet, so I struggled a bit with my first design, since it had the added layer in the process. That is not to say I did not have any good moments, nor that I didn't learn a lot. My favorite project was actually the second one I believe (maybe it was the third, doesn't really matter).

The project was to design a pavilion that would hold/present two works of art of a particular artists. The artist I choose was Rebecca Horn, a German artist. From her works I choose "Signs of stones" and "Finger Gloves". What both of those art work have in common is that they both have sound. Signs of stone was a violin with stones glued that was played by a machine, so it played itself, and with finger gloves, so that the people seeing it would understand it I decided to put the video of her using them. The challenge of this work was to optimize the sound at the same time as isolating it so that when you were in one of the rooms listening to the violins you would not hear the video and vice versa.

Another particular point of that project was that it was curved, partly to help the sound travel better partly to create a clear path to follow. The curves were subtle, a little like the curves you find in F.L. Wright's Johnson Wax Building. This posed the additional challenge of finding a way to make the model since the laser cutter couldn't do those curves and neither could I by hand, opted to used the 3D printer. My goals for this project were perhaps a lot more difficult than anyone my year should tackle, and no I am not bragging just saying a bit of more than I could chew, but I learned a lot from that project and I face a lot. So yes, I was very busy, falling and learning, but I wouldn't be studying architecture if I wasn't.
